“Stephen is the winemaker, Prue the viticulturist behind the magnificent array of wines profiled in this edition of the Halliday Wine Companion… Great wine made in the vineyard? Absolutely.”
James Halliday AM – Wine Companion Awards 2021, AU
The Henschke family’s grape growing and winemaking tradition span six generations, from outstanding sustainable vineyards that scatter across Eden Valley, Barossa Valley and the Adelaide Hills.
Today, it is the 5th-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke and his viticulturist wife Prue at the helm, together with the 6th-genetation members of the Henschke family, passionately upholding the family name and reputation. Stephen and Prue continue to craft their white wines with a focus on purity, while their red wines have a strong focus on terroir, using traditional winemaking techniques.
EXCEPTIONAL WINES FROM SUSTAINABLE VINEYARDS
“Prue and I are the current ‘keepers of the flame’. Just as earlier generations have done, we want to manage the vineyards and winery so they can be passed on to the next generation in better condition than we inherited them. The last 50 years have been an incredible journey for the Australian wine industry. Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone are arguably the two oldest single vineyard wines produced in this country that tell the wine story of Australia. Our vision would not be complete without the expectation that future generations will uphold and perpetuate our belief that such ancient and unique single-vineyard sites can produce exceptional wines that are prized for their beauty and rarity.” – Stephen Henschke.
In June 2021 Henschke was awarded a Robert Parker Wine Advocate Green Emblem, which recognises 24 wineries from around the world that have demonstrated extraordinary efforts in the pursuit of environmentally friendly practices. To qualify for this award, a producer may or may not already be organic and/or biodynamic certified, however needs to be an outstanding proponent of sustainability who looks towards long-term environmental protection and biodiversity. The Robert Parker Green Emblem is given on rare and exceptional merit.
Henschke is one of the astonishing winemakers in Australia and around the globe. It is recognised for its rich heritage, innovative spirit and commitment to hand crafting exceptional wines for 150 years.
